MAINE LANDSCAPE DESIGN THAT CELEBRATES THE WISDOM & BEAUTY OF NATURE

A garden that’s planted purely by aesthetic decisions is like a car with no engine, it may look beautiful, the stereo works great, but you’re going to have to push it up the hill.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW…

If your name is Brett, Sophia is an unusual name to give your landscape design business. Names tend to come to me out of the blue. My first son, Ulysess, was named this way. The name just landed in my lap as I sat on the couch one morning, thinking of his upcoming arrival.

In 2022, I needed a rebrand (from Black Birch Landscapes) after niching down my business for about five years. The type of landscaping I did in 2014 was very different than what I am doing now. Since then, I slowly came to realize that nature possesses inherent wisdom. Sophia, meaning wisdom, made perfect sense. Nature has a way of intelligently solving landscape design problems with plants. It was much easier to work with that "wisdom" instead of brute forcing "solutions," which tends to create more problems.

Why did you name your ecological landscaping company Sophia?
